“From Moiré Materials to Atomic Simulators: Modeling and Probing Quantum Matter”
Abstract
Advances in the fabrication and manipulation of two-dimensional quantum materials and simulators offer new avenues to explore the quantum many-body problem. In this talk, I will use two complementary platforms to examine how strongly correlated behavior emerges and how we can probe it. I will begin with semiconductor moiré materials, whose tunability has opened access to new regimes of quantum magnetism. To predict the behavior of these materials from realistic microscopic models, I will show how advances in machine learning, particularly neural quantum states combined with variational Monte Carlo, enable simulations on classical computers. I will then turn to ultracold atoms, whose precise experimental control provides a complementary setting for realizing related phenomena and developing new spectroscopic probes. I will discuss an analogue of scanning tunneling microscopy in Rydberg tweezer arrays and methods for resolving composite magnetic excitations at finite momentum in optical lattices.
